Halloween Horror Recommendation: Wyrmwood

Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead

If you’re like me and you have had your fill of anything having to do with zombies, then watching, yet, another zombie apocalypse movie is probably the last thing you want to do. However, based on some positive reviews I’ve read, I decided to give Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead a shot.

While the plot of Wyrmwood isn’t the most original, what makes it worth watching is how it reminded me of Peter Jackson’s earlier works: Bad Taste and DeadAlive. If you have ever seen either movie, then you know how absurd and over-the-top both are. This alone takes it a notch or two above the plethora of zombie movies being churned out on a regular basis.

Despite the lack of scares, I do suggest you check out Wyrmwood if you’re looking for something above your run-of-the-mill zombie flicks.

Halloween Horror Recommendation: Starry Eyes

Starry Eyes

What would you do for fame?

That is the question that is asked and answered in this haunting and brutal film from co-directors / co-writers Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer.

Part Rosemary’s Baby and part Black Swan, Starry Eyes centers on Sarah, a young woman struggling to make ends meet while trying to make it as an actress in Hollywood.

It’s a familiar tale till you realize Sarah (played by Alex Essoe in a role which should get her more notice) could be having a mental breakdown when she begins pulling chunks of her hair out after one failed audition.

It doesn’t help that her small group of friends also share the same Hollywood dream and, like her, are having a hard time getting their foot in the door. But this all changes for Sarah when she auditions for and wins a starring role in a horror movie being produced by a once-reputable horror production company.

And this is when the real horror begins for Sarah.

I had no idea what to expect going into Starry Eyes which is why I won’t spoil how things go for Sarah. It isn’t often when I’m surprised at how most horror movies turn out. This one surprised me because I thought it would go in one direction but it ended up going in a much darker direction which was true to the core of the movie.

Starry Eyes is one of the best horror movies I’ve seen in a long time, and I can’t recommend it enough to horror fans.
